The Underwater Prairie That Came Back From Nothing

Seventy years after disease wiped out Virginia's eelgrass, 70 million hand-scattered seeds have grown the world's largest seagrass restoration — and a carbon vault to match.

Off the barrier islands of Virginia's Eastern Shore lies one of the ocean's quietest success stories — a shimmering underwater prairie that, until recently, wasn't there at all. Eelgrass, the humble seagrass that once carpeted these coastal bays, was wiped out in the 1930s by disease and a hurricane. For seventy years the lagoons stayed barren. Then scientists started scattering seeds.

A Meadow Rebuilt by Hand

Since 1999, researchers from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and The Nature Conservancy have broadcast more than 70 million eelgrass seeds into four empty seaside lagoons. They didn't plant a whole meadow — they seeded a spark. The grass did the rest, spreading on its own until it now blankets nearly 9,000 acres, making it the largest and most successful seagrass restoration project in the world.

The transformation is more than cosmetic. Within a few years of seeding, the water clears, scallops and seahorses return, and fish nurseries flicker back to life. Seagrass is a keystone habitat: a single acre can shelter thousands of juvenile creatures that later feed both wildlife and coastal fishing communities.

The Ocean's Secret Carbon Vault

Here's the part that surprises people. Seagrass covers a tiny sliver of the seafloor, yet it's one of the planet's most powerful carbon sponges. The restored Virginia beds now bury roughly 3,000 metric tons of carbon every year, along with 600 tons of excess nitrogen that would otherwise choke the bays.

Acre for acre, seagrass meadows can lock away carbon faster than a tropical rainforest — and hold it for centuries.

That staying power isn't a guess. A 2025 study tracing carbon in seagrass sediments found that much of it had persisted for hundreds of years, even in places where the grass itself had vanished for decades. Globally, the living leaves and roots of seagrass store an estimated 40 million tons of carbon, and researchers reported in May 2025 that protecting these coastal "blue carbon" ecosystems could prevent 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon pollution — climate damage valued at over $200 billion.

Why This One Matters

Seagrass restoration is refreshingly democratic. It doesn't require a submarine or a billion-dollar lab — it needs seeds, shallow water, and people willing to protect what grows back. Much of the Virginia work has been done by scientists and volunteers hauling seed by the bucketful, proving that a damaged ecosystem, given a nudge and a little patience, wants to heal.
